The Boy Who Cried Wolf: The Obama-Era Red Scare

Katie Writes · Sep 3, 2026
Conservative hyperbole about looming socialism is nothing new. Obama's rise provoked panicked warnings about a socialist threat, in the form of Obamacare, the rescue of GM, or even a back-to-school speech. And every Democrat, no matter how centrist, was in on it, from Barack Obama and Joe Biden to Nancy Pelosi and Hillary Clinton.
Representative Paul Ryan|
Social Security right now is a collectivist system…Autopilot will bring more government, more collectivism, [and] more centralized government if we do not succeed in switching these programs…from a third party or socialist system.
In the same speech, Ryan referred to Dick Gephardt, Nancy Pelosi, and Ted Kennedy as “collectivist, class-warfare breathing demagogues.” Ryan would later go on to be Republican nominee for Vice President, Speaker of the House, and member of the Fox News Board of Directors.
Governor Sarah Palin|
Barack Obama calls it spreading the wealth. Joe Biden calls higher taxes patriotic. But Joe the Plumber and Ed the Dairyman, I believe they think it sounds more like socialism. Friends, now is no time to experiment with socialism.
This was part of Sarah Palin’s stump speech as Republican nominee for Vice President.
Senator John McCain|
[Obama] believes in redistributing wealth, not in policies that help us all make more of it. Joe [the Plumber], in his plainspoken way, said this sounded a lot like socialism. And a lot of Americans are thinking along those same lines…

At least in Europe, the socialist leaders who so admire my opponent are upfront about their objectives.
Senator Jon Kyl|
It’s not that Barack Obama is a socialist, but he subscribes to socialist tenets.
Senator George Voinovich |
[Obama] is left of Teddy Kennedy. With all due respect, the man is a socialist.
Representative Todd Akin|
This campaign in the next couple of weeks is about one thing. It’s a referendum on socialism.
Akin said this at a rally for John McCain’s presidential run.
Representative John Boehener|
First it was the stimulus, then the omnibus and now the budget. It’s all a down payment on a new American socialist experiment.
Boehner was House Minority Leader at the time. He later became Speaker of the House.
Senator Jim DeMint|
Part of what we're trying to do in [his book, “Saving Freedom: We Can Stop America's Slide Into Socialism”] is just show that where we are, we're about where Germany was before World War II where they became a social democracy. You still had votes but the votes were just power grabs like you see in Iran, and other places in South America, like Chavez is running down in Venezuela…[When] immigrants get here, they're worried, because they see it happening here.
DeMint would go on to lead The Heritage Foundation, the most important conservative think tank.
Jim Greer|
As the father of four children, I am absolutely appalled that taxpayer dollars are being used to spread President Obama’s socialist ideology.
Greer, the head of the Florida GOP, condemned Obama’s back-to-school speech as “indoctrination” before it was even delivered, even though Republicans Ronald Reagan and G.H.W. Bush had also delivered back-to-school speeches.
Governor Rick Perry|
This is an administration hell bent on taking America towards a socialist country. And we ought not be afraid to say that because that's what it is.
After serving as Governor of Texas for 14 years, Perry became Secretary of Energy in the first Trump Administration.
Senator Jeff Sessions|
I said, well, I don't know if I can hold hands and walk down the road to socialism…This [bill] endangers our heritage.
Sessions decried the stimulus package to pull the country out of the Great Recession as socialism. After serving as a senator for 20 years, Sessions became Donald Trump’s first Attorney General.
Senator Richard Shelby|
It’s the road toward socialism, government intervention in the market in a big way. What’s the end game here and can the American people afford it. I think the answer is obviously not.
The government’s rescue of GM was socialism.
Senator Richard Shelby|
We’re going down a road where it’s unchartered. We’re going down a road to disaster…There’s got to be some other way better than what we’re doing. Not the socialist way, but to try and get our free market working again.
The stimulus package was socialism.
Michael Steele|
The Democrats are indeed marching America toward European-style socialism, and I will continue to criticize their dangerous policies in that regard.
Steele was Chairman of the Republican National Committee.
Representative Paul Broun|
I know [Obama is a socialist]…[I]n college he leaned to Marxist tendencies and is linked to Marxist professors. He joined Marxists clubs. And look at who he’s put in his administration, they’re devout socialists. America has to stand up and decide if we want to be a socialist nation or if we’re going to be a free nation.
The following year, Broun said, “Mr. Obama believes in central government where the federal government controls everything in our lives. That's socialism.”
Mitt Romney|
It is an often-remarked-upon irony that at a time when Europe is moving away from socialism and its many failures, President Obama is moving us toward that direction.
In his long career, Romney was governor of Massachusetts, Republican presidential nominee, and US Senator.
Senator Roger Wicker|
[D]uring the next two to three weeks this Congress will make a decision about whether we move towards European socialism or try to tackle this healthcare issue the old tried-and-true American way.
Obamacare was socialism.
Senator Tom Coburn|
Tax expenditures are not tax cuts. Tax expenditures are socialism and corporate welfare.
Tax subsidies (targeted tax breaks) are socialism.
Ted Cruz|
I think that when President Obama was first elected, a lot of Republicans in Washington didn’t know what they were dealing with, because most people in ordinary life don’t run into honest-to-God socialists…

[H]e has pushed relentlessly for European-style socialism in this country, and I use that word in its literal sense…Socialism is government ownership or control of the means of production or distribution. And, in my judgment, that has been the unified theme of this administration.
Cruz was elected to the US Senate later in 2012, where he still serves.
Senator Ron Johnson|
[T]his is a [presidential] election…about what path we take this country on - whether we continue down this path of European-style Socialism.
Bill O'Reilly|
Obamacare is just part of a vision for the forced sharing of American assets…[this] is a socialist-communist vision.
O’Reilly’s show on Fox was the top cable news show for years.
Senator Pat Roberts|
There’s a palpable fear among Kansans all across the state that the America that we love and cherish will not be the same America for our kids and grandkids…[W]e have to change course because our country is headed for national socialism.
America is headed for Nazism.
Judd Gregg|
The Obama presidency has been built on the theme of class warfare…

Socialism (or “progressivism,” which is the term of preference for the left) is now the engine that drives the policies of the Democratic agenda.
Gregg served one term as New Hampshire Governor and three terms in the US Senate.
Governor Bobby Jindal|
I’m running [for president] because I want to stop President Obama and Secretary Clinton from turning the American dream into the European nightmare. We are on the path towards socialism. It’s not too late, but the hour is late.
Senator Marco Rubio|
And let's dispel once and for all with this fiction that Barack Obama doesn't know what he's doing. He knows exactly what he's doing. Barack Obama is undertaking a systematic effort to change this country.
Rubio served in the US Senate for 14 years before serving as both Secretary of State and National Security Adviser in the second Trump Administration.
