High-level Republicans are throwing around wild conspiracies about communist plots, infiltration, and revolution. They are darkly intimating that even centrist Democrats harbor murderous, totalitarian aims, while they rehabilitate Joseph McCarthy. But history is repeating itself as farce. McCarthy at least operated during the height of the Soviet bloc, whereas today's cold warriors are jumping at shadows, 35 years after the fall of the Soviet Union.
